This Year 5 Word Problems Addition and Subtraction activity checks pupils’ understanding of using the formal column method to solve addition and subtraction calculations, and their understanding of estimating through rounding. Pupils will state what error has been made in a column addition calculation, complete a column subtraction calculation, estimate the weight of parcels using rounding and then add them together, calculate the height of two children using subtraction, and use clues to calculate the number of pages in three books.
