Teacher Specific Information
Children are able to practise their segmenting skills with this phonics identify the sound game. They need to identify the correct phase 3 sound at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of a word before turning the card over to reveal the answer.
This game features the following phase 3 sounds to identify within words:
j in jellyfish, sh in shop, z in zip, v in vest, y in yo-yo, qu in quilt, ch in chick, x in six, zz in fizz, w in wall, ai in chain, ng in string, ee in bee, th in bath, oa in goat, oo in moon, igh in light, oo in cook, or in torch, ar in farm, oi in soil, ow in owl, er in river, ur in church, ear in beard, ure in cure and air in stair.

40 – 60 Months
(L-R19) Can segment the sounds in simple words and blend them together and knows which letters represent some of them.
(L-R20) Links sounds to letters, naming and sounding the letters of the alphabet.

(ELG9) Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.
