This Year 5 Synonym Matching Activity 2 aims to provide an opportunity for pupils to increase their range of vocabulary in a fun and interactive way. Children try to find synonym pairs by turning over and memorising the position of the vocabulary cards. They can also add a competitive element by repeating the game and trying to beat their previous time.

Whilst we know the terminology and objectives for ‘synonyms’ and ‘antonyms’ are not introduced until Year 6, we are aware that teachers in other year groups also cover this in order to expand children’s range of vocabulary.

Reading – Word Reading
Apply their growing knowledge of root words, prefixes and suffixes (etymology and morphology) as listed in – see English appendix 1, both to read aloud and to understand the meaning of new words they meet.
